WP10.4 - Exchanges between prescribed burning and suppression fire practitioners

The lack of transference of knowledge between old and new fire professionals is a common problem all over the world. After a fire, and a life of fires, it is difficult to explain to new generations the lessons learned. A common and logical language to transmit experience is needed. Without this a lot of knowledge and training in the stations is flying out. To be able to incorporate lessons learned by old generations every new fire manager needs to learn to look and observe fires as a part of fighting, and that can not be learned only in book or other pedagogical supports. Prescribed fire is a good tool to learn and understand fire. What one can see is related directly to what one knows.

Due to the lack of a common and logical language to transmit experience, there are also problems to work in different places, where you have not experienced local conditions. So a good fire analysis training for is needed to exchange experiences. This can be accomplished by interchanges and help between different regions and countries, as a tool for professional fire management training. But it is important to determine the level of expertise needed for exchanges in prescribed burning, and in fire management. This work package will produce such guidelines for exchanges between fire managers. to improve knowledge transference between professionals. It will also create the opportunities of accumulating and transferring knowledge and experience, both in prescribed burning and in managing large fast intense fire
