WP13.4 - Suppression fire integration

Fire regime has changed in most of southern Europe, and more and more large fires are expected. A deep knowledge about fire use during fire suppression operations is needed, and to do it, research, the professional world and society should work in the same direction. Integration of the work done in different tasks will proceed through a workshop of experts from different tasks. Also, a constant effort will be made on the study of real cases to get a common line of work on fire suppression and to improve the quality of the work done in the different tasks. At the end we should be able to produce guidelines about fire use during fire suppression for different stakeholders.

Results with the potential to be integrated include experimental and numerical studies of wildland fire behaviour and effects, prediction of ignition and fuel flammability and temporal variation of a fuel moisture, analysis of costs and benefits from suppression fires considering the human factors involved, mapping of potential use of prescribed burning and suppression fires, development of high tech tools for fire bosses, models and systems improvement, development of a fuel editor and fire effects visualization, complete review of policies and practices at the European and National scale with emphasis on prescribed burning and suppression fires, aerial Platform and ground units for real time fire monitoring, documentation of past fires, fire analysis and data organisation, demonstration for suppression fires, survey of existing academic training, material and courses, production of academic and professional material and courses, production of new training possibilities for fire professionals, exchanges between prescribed burning and suppression fires practitioners, state of the art: strategic information and communication on forest fires, with some bench marks on natural disasters, analysis of the communication process in the fire paradox field: survey and search for best practices, recommended communication and dissemination strategy for Fire Paradox, guidelines on different aspects of fire, Fire Paradox information management platform, Fire Paradox "White Book".
